Armenia, 2022-2023
My long-term photographic work is haunted by this question: how can we think about the future of young people in Armenia? My father is Armenian, and I felt the need to get closer to this culture. A few childhood memories, a mixture of smells, looks and faces, and now the desire to follow the trail of my ancestors and their history. From their native Cilicia (southern province of Anatolia) to the genocide of 1915, which led them first to Lebanon and then to France. In the rubble of today's Armenia, a country at war with Azerbaijan and situated on the borders of different empires - Russian, Iranian and Turkish - I set out to paint a portrait of youth, heir to a history whose complexity and intrinsic violence continue to resonate. It's also an account of places and territories tormented by war and precariousness, where, despite everything, there's still a look to the future.
